Shute Harbour Marine Terminal tenants on board

Back

The restored Shute Harbour Marine Terminal will be a unique opportunity to discover the wonders of the Whitsundays, with Cruise Whitsundays, Elysian Retreat, Explore Hamilton Island, Island Transfers, Palm Bay Resort, Pioneer Adventures, Salty Sea Dog Kayaking, SeaLink and Whitsunday Island Camping Connection signing on as tenants in the new facility.

Expected to reopen to the public before Christmas this year, the Shute Harbour Marine Terminal is only ten minutes from Airlie Beach and a few nautical miles from the Whitsunday Islands.

Mayor Andrew Willcox said construction was progressing well despite some delays in supply of building materials arriving due to the impacts of the global pandemic.

“Like most of the construction industry, there have been setbacks with the delivery of items such as the baggage handling system and terminal switchboard.

“Subject to weather, we should finish construction in the next few months and fit out the building ready for our new tenants with the facility reopening to the public by the end of the year,” he said.

“It is exciting that we can deliver a world-class marine facility in the heart of the Whitsundays with established marine and tourism operators on board.”

“The fishing platform will reopen to the public once construction and commissioning is finished later this year.”

The Shute Harbour Marine Terminal will be a new, modern two-story terminal building with a timber façade using the recycled timber from the old wharf.

The facility will boast three new finger pontoons and a range of berthing options, terminal ticketing and baggage claim area, new fuel facility, restaurant, retail space, carpark and a recreational fishing platform.

The new seawall has raised the level of the entire site by an extra metre to be more resilient against storm surges in the future.

Eligible works received joint funding from the Commonwealth and State Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
